Pope Saint John Paul II (b. May 18, 1920 – d. April 2, 2005).  Born Karol Józef Wojtyła, Pope John Paul II served as the pontiff from 1978 until his death in 2005.  Born in Poland, he was the first non-Italian pope since 1523.
